CSLB Workers’ Compensation Reporting
Effective July 1, 2024, contractors are required to list up to the top three workers’ compensation classification codes with the highest estimated payroll on their Contractors State License Board (CSLB) license renewal form.
While this requirement is not a July 1 deadline (unless you have a July 1 license renewal), we are approaching the second year anniversary of this measure and it bears a reminder.
At Your Next License Renewal
➡️Verify workers’ compensation classifications with your broker or insurer
➡️Confirm payroll allocations
➡️Report the three workers’ compensation classification codes with the highest estimated payroll,
OR
➡️Provide every classification code reported on the policy if you have fewer than three classification codes.
Remember
Failure to provide required class codes can delay license renewal.
NEW FOR 2026: Form I-9 Compliance Risks Increase
In March 2026, ICE updated its Form I-9 inspection guidance and reclassified numerous errors that were previously considered technical violations into substantive violations. These violations may now result in fines without an opportunity to correct them during an audit.
Common Problem Areas
- Missing employee date of birth
- Missing date of hire
- Failure to provide date next to employee signature in Section 1
- Missing rehire date
- Missing name and title of the employer representative
- Failure to ensure that the preparer and/or translator’s complete name, address, signature, and date are provided on Form I-9 at the time of completion in Supplement A
MCAC Recommendation
Conduct an internal I-9 audit before an ICE inspection does it for you.
Potential Penalties
Current federal penalties for substantive I-9 violations range from approximately $288 to $2,861 per violation.
